Personalized Reading Instruction for Elementary Aged Students

My Personal Approach and Beliefs

unnamed.jpg

My name is Lisa and I provide one-on-one reading instruction for elementary-aged students. I utilize a systematic, tailored approach to diagnose and remediate reading difficulties. By meeting  students exactly where they are, I am able to intentionally scaffold instruction and create manageable, achievable steps in teaching children to read. With increased confidence, students begin to feel safe and supported in taking instructional risks. This confidence leads to motivation, which in turn leads to success!

My skills and training

I hold a Master's degree in Reading from Widener University and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Penn State University. With 28 years of teaching experience, 18 of them dedicated specifically to reading instruction in the primary grades, I bring deep expertise and a passion for helping young readers feel success.

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and ground my instruction in the Science of Reading. My teaching is direct, systematic, and designed to target each student's needs.

Client Focus

At the heart of my practice is your child. I work closely with families to understand each student's unique needs and methods of learning. With focused instruction, scaffolding, and consistent praise, I help children grow into capable readers.

My Mission Statement

At reading2rise, my mission is to provide strong foundational skills to close the reading gap, leading to  improved fluency, comprehension, and most importantly confidence. Learning to read is a fundamental human right-one that has the power to change the trajectory of a child's life. When a child learns to read, he or she not only grows academically, but also thrives socially and emotionally. Every child deserves this right.

Parent Testimonials

Nothing speaks louder than the words of families who have seen their children grow into confident, capable readers. Their stories reflect the dedication, care, and results that define our reading sessions.

Parent of 2nd grader

My son began reading with Ms. Lisa over a year ago, starting below grade level, and the progress he's made since then has been truly remarkable. Her kindness, patience, and deep understanding have made all the difference in his learning journey. Ms. Lisa approaches every session with genuine passion and a heartfelt commitment to helping children grow. We are incredibly grateful for the nurturing, supportive environment she creates-it has changed our son's confidence and love for reading.

Parent of 4th grader

Lisa has worked with our son for several years, beginning when he was first identified by his kindergarten teacher as behind in reading. Since then, the progress he has made under her guidance has been nothing short of remarkable. Lisa brings exceptional care and intentionality to each session, thoughtfully planning instruction that both compliments and enhances his school curriculum. Her open and consistent communication with us about his progress has been invaluable. What sets Lisa apart is her deep understanding of how to support students with unique learning needs. Our son has developmental delays, and Lisa has been instrumental in bridging the gap between his speech challenges and phonetic reading skills. Recognizing the vital connection between reading and writing, she has skillfully nurtured both areas in tandem, helping him develop into a more confident  and capable communicator. The transformation we have witnessed in our son's academic growth and his self-confidence speaks volumes about Lisa's talent, dedication, and impact. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had her as a  partner in our child's learning journey!

Parent of 1st grader

Having seen firsthand the extraordinary impact Lisa had as a reading teacher for our older child, we didn't hesitate to reach out and begin lessons for our incoming kindergartner. From the very start, Lisa has brought warmth, patience, and a truly engaging approach to tutoring that has made learning both accessible and exciting for our daughter. Lisa masterfully balances grade-level expectations while gently encouraging our daughter to rise to new challenges. Her sessions are thoughtfully designed and deeply engaging. They are filled with books, games, hands-on tools, and creative strategies that keep our daughter not only focused but genuinely enthusiastic about learning. During their sessions, Lisa invites our daughter to help shape her learning experience, giving her agency and ownership in a way that builds confidence and motivation. Lisa is a gifted educator with boundless patience and an intuitive and practiced understanding of how children learn best!

Parent of 2nd grader

When my son first started tutoring with Lisa, he was in first grade and could not read and his teachers were concerned. Over the course of 9 months, with tutoring twice weekly, he caught up and by the end of second grade he was reading at grade level and enjoying chapter books. Thank you!

Testimonials

Parent of 4th grader

I am thrilled to share my experience with Lisa as my son's tutor. From the very first session, it was clear that she possessed a unique ability to meet him exactly where he was in his reading journey. Her passion for teaching and her deep understanding of his individual needs truly set her apart.

Lisa has the ability to ignite excitement about reading in her students. She introduced engaging materials that not only captivated my son's interest but also made learning feel like an adventure rather than a chore Even when he encountered challenges and felt overwhelmed by difficult material, Lisa's firm yet nurturing approach encouraged him to push through and stick with it. She knows just how to motivate while providing the support needed to build confidence.

Working with Lisa has been an absolute pleasure. Lisa's professionalism, warmth, and dedication shine through in every interaction. My son looked forward to his sessions with her, which speaks volumes about her ability to create a positive learning environment.

I wholeheartedly recommend Lisa to any parent seeking an exceptional tutor who can inspire their child and foster a love of reading. We are so grateful for the impact she has had on our child.

Parent of 3rd grader

Lisa worked with our son through early elementary school, and dramatically improved his reading and writing. She  identified problem areas and taught him strategies that he uses to this day. As a result, he went from a below average reader to a student who excels  at reading, writing, and comprehension, We are grateful for her talent.

Parent of kindergartner and second grader

Lisa worked with our family for over four years, both as our children's in-school reading specialist and after-school tutor, including our son, who has an IEP for dyslexia. Lisa's patient, kind, and consistent teaching style made the tutoring sessions enjoyable for the kids and she was able to tailor the sessions to their areas of interest to keep them motivated. She is very experienced, always professional, always kind and we would happily recommend her to anyone looking for additional reading support for their kids.
